Audition tapes have been leaked for the sequel to this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, and seem to imply that Gwen Stacy will be appearing in the next film.
Two such tapes have been released in recent days, one featuring the French actress Louna, the other Iris Haller, who is from Luxembourg. Both are relatively unknown, and perhaps indicate that the film is having an open casting call, especially since Marvel Studios and Disney would be normally put anyone auditioning under a non-disclosure agreement.
In the newer video, Haller-as-Gwen can be heard talking to “Peter” about the death of his Uncle Ben. This is somewhat odd, because her dialogue implies that this was a recent event, while in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Uncle Ben died some time before Peter first shows up in Captain America: Civil War. Assuming that this is from the upcoming film (and it may just be placeholder dialogue), this could indicate a flashback or something similar.
“Gwen” also has a conversation with her father, George Stacy, who is a police commissioner. This conversation also seems to indicate that Gwen will have a romantic interest in Peter Parker/Spider-Man, as she describes him as the only boy she knows who isn’t trying to be “a player.”
In the comics, Gwen Stacy is one of Peter Parker’s greatest loves, though their romance was cut short when she was killed by the supervillain known as the Green Goblin. This story line was used in the recent non-MCU film The Amazing Spider-Man 2, though some adaptations (such as the Spectacular Spider-Man TV series) use Gwen as a main love interest without her dying.
Gwen has been used in other ways, however; the Ultimate Marvel comics make her mostly a platonic friend of Peter’s, while an alternate universe’s version of her (“Spider-Gwen”) is now active as a superheroine herself. Using her in the next Spider-Man film as love interest would be unusual, though, as Spider-Man: Homecoming set up another girl, Liz Allan, in that role. Then again, the web-slinger has had quite a few love triangles over his comic career, so we cannot rule that idea out.
The next MCU Spider-Man film isn’t set for release until July 5, 2019, so it will presumably be a while before we know Gwen’s role for certain.
