Innovative Therapy Treatment for Depression

Treatment for clinical Depression

My first episode of clinical depression occurred after a break up. I was 25 and thought I was in love. Once the dust settled, I found myself blue to say the least. I felt like an empty shell of myself, weighed down by feelings of sadness. Friends urged me to get out of the house, but I couldn’t find the point in it. Two weeks after the breakup my symptoms persisted. Uninformed about clinical depression I continued to struggle without seeking treatment. That episode lasted not months but years. If you think you could be suffering from a similar experience, please reclaim your life and your happiness sooner than I did. Please seek treatment or reach out to family or friends for help.

TMS Health Solutions recently published an article describing the characteristics of clinical depression. While that article described the illness generally, this article seeks to take a closer look at some of the common symptoms that sufferers of clinical depression experience. It should be noted that the symptoms of clinical depression are as diverse as the population that it affects. If a person has clinical depression it is quite possible for them to have one or all of these symptoms, or symptoms that are not listed in this article.

Principal Signs of Depression

Had I known the primary signs of clinical depression when I was 25, I could have sought treatment earlier and saved myself months of anguish. TMS Health Solutions wishes to ensure that everyone is well-versed in the principal signs of depression so that they may help themselves or others dealing with the illness. Clinical Depression is marked by a mood change that last more than two weeks. The two principal signs of clinical depression are overwhelming emotions of grief or sadness and loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy.

Overwhelming Sadness

The first principal sign of depression is an overwhelming feeling of sadness

or grief. This symptom has been described as an empty hole inside of a person that can never be filled up. Some describe this symptom as feeling weighed down by an invisible force that is present throughout one’s day. While many life events cause sadness, this type of overwhelming sadness spreads to every aspect of a person’s life when they suffer from clinical depression. Further, unwarranted sadness is a sure sign of this first major symptom of clinical depression.

Hedonism is the pursuit of pleasure and we humans find pleasure in the most remarkable places. Whether it be in a sunrise, the smile of a friend, or connecting with a higher power, people derive pleasure from a vast array of activities. Anhedonia is the inability to experience pleasure. People suffering with clinical depression will find that activities that they usually love will not bring them pleasure as it once did.

Other Common Symptoms

While overwhelming sadness and anhedonia are the primary signs of clinical depression, people suffering from the illness can also feel several of the following symptoms: Insomnia, Slowed or increased m

ovement, Loss of energy or fatigue, low self-confidence, inappropriate guilt, feeling hopeless, helpless, or worthless, diminished concentration or thinking, unexplained physical ailments, or thoughts of death or suicide. In addition to the two principal symptoms of clinical depression, doctors will look for four or more of these other symptoms when diagnosing the disorder.

Treatment of Clinical Depression

Whether your symptoms are physical, behavioral, or emotional, you do not need to combat clinical depression alone. In the past, clinical depression has been treated with therapy, antidepressants or a combination of the two. TMS or transcranial magnetic stimulation is a new type of treatment for clinical depression that is producing promising results. Cleared by the FDA in 2008, TMS treatment uses magnetic fields to painlessly stimulate nerve cells in the patient’s brain. This produces a change in brain activity in regions of the brain implicated in mood regulation.
