Carla Gugino Open to Returning for Season 2 of The Haunting of Hill House

Netflix subscribers had a spooky surprise this Halloween with the devilishly good horror series The Haunting of Hill House. Recently, one of the show’s stars said that she’d gladly return to the series if it gets a second season on the digital platform. Carla Gugino, who played Olivia Crain in the show’s first season, said she would be more than happy to return to The Haunting of Hill House if Netflix gives the show a second season. This comes as Mike Flanagan, the series showrunner and director, said that a second season would not feature the Crain family. Gugino elaborated on her comments in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Gugino told the entertainment news magazine that one of the ideas Flanagan has for the series is for it to embrace an anthology route similar to FX’s American Horror Story, where each season tells a different story with a completely new cast of characters. If asked, Gugino would love to play a new character in a Haunting of Hill House anthology installment.

Gugino also said that she greatly enjoys working with Flanagan. In addition to The Haunting of Hill House, Gugino teamed with Flanagan on the Netflix film Gerald’s Game. Gugino further told The Hollywood Reporter that she and Flanagan are like-minded, which always makes for exciting collaborations. This collaborative spirit helped Gugino mold her character of Olivia from The Haunting of Hill House, helping the actress understand her character before the show was even in production. Joining with Flanagan at that stage of the creative process made Gugino feel that she had an ownership over Olivia’s character and factored in how she brought the character to life.

Although a second season of The Haunting of Hill House hasn’t been officially ordered by Netflix, the show’s critical success all but assures a second entry in the series. Nevertheless, Flanagan doesn’t want to start preparing for a second season until he gets official confirmation of the show’s renewal from Netflix. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Flanagan speculated on what a second season might look like by saying that the show is about haunted places and haunted people. As such, another entry in the series might take place in the first season’s setting of Hill House or any number of haunted locations throughout the world.

Season one of The Haunting of Hill House is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
