The Riverdale universe grew a little bit bigger this week as the first casting details have been announced on its upcoming spinoff series, Katy Keene. Producers with the show revealed to Entertainment Weekly that actress Lucy Hale, best known as Aria on Pretty Little Liars, will be playing the titular role. The show’s producer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also produces Riverdale, celebrated Hale’s casting on Twitter. In a tweet, Aguirre-Sacasa posted a photo of Hale next to an image of Keene from a classic comic series, saying that he was very excited to work with the actress. Described as a musical dramedy, Katy Keene will take place in Manhattan and focus on Katy’s efforts to break into the world of the New York City fashion scene.
While Katy Keene will be a spinoff series of Riverdale, the show will take place several years after the events of its mother series. As such, it is unlikely that Archie, Betty, or other characters from Riverdale will ever crossover on Katy Keene. Nevertheless, actress Ashleigh Murray, who plays Josie McCoy on Riverdale, will be a regular on Katy Keene. Part of Josie’s storyline will be her efforts to start her career as a professional musician. The show is also reported to have a lighter tone than Riverdale. While Riverdale follows storylines that involve murder mysteries and cults, Katy Keene will tell stories that follow the average trials and tribulations of people in their 20s.
If ordered to series, Katy Keene will be the second spinoff of Riverdale. The first spinoff, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, airs on Netflix and will be premiering its second season next month. Like Katy Keene, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has a very different tone from Riverdale, with themes of witchcraft and the occult. As such, series producers have stressed that there is little chance that Sabrina and Riverdale could ever crossover in future seasons.
