American Idol Recap: Prince Hits and Birthday Years

On Sunday, May 6, Ryan Seacrest announced a few exciting news. First of all, ABC has picked the popular series for another season! Second of all, the contestants who made the top 7 are going on tour this summer.

“Big show tonight – the top 7 will be singing songs by @prince and @nickjonas mentored them on songs from the year they were born. We’re live coast-to-coast at 8e|5p! #americanidol,” Ryan Seacrest tweeted.

The seven singers were singing two songs: one from the Prince catalog and the other one from the year they were born. Who’s the youngest, you might ask? Gabby Barrett and Catie Turner were the youngest of the bunch, each born in 2000! That makes Cade Foehner, born in 1996, the elder of the remaining contestants.

So there you have it, it was all up to Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Oh, and of course, our host, Ryan Seacrest!

Can anyone ever sing Prince’s “Kiss” as he did? No. But Jurnee was close! She kicked the show off with the song and showed everyone that she is ready for this challenge! Her purple boots made her look even more powerful on stage. Unfortunately, for her birthday song, she went with Brian McKnight’s “Back at One,” and she just faded into the background. The purple boots were soon forgotten and even though Nick Jonas told her that she’d got a real chance to win, no one could save her anymore. Not even Ryan Seacrest, who can basically do anything.

Gabby Barrett

Another fine performance from Idol’s country girl! “I Hope You Dance” was Lee Ann Womack’s big hit, so everyone was super excited about Gabby singing it. Some found this performance a bit dull, but no matter what anybody says, it was actually technically perfect. Then she performed “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore” by Prince and left everyone, especially Lionel almost speechless. “That was what you call, my dear, ownership,” he said.

Michael J. Woodard

While Michael might not be the perfect contestant for a perfect hit like “I Would Die 4 U” by Prince, he actually showed a lot of good things here. Although he fumbled the lyrics, he is incredibly talented to cover his mistakes with his smile and make them barely noticeable. Also, he gave Sheila E. a hug (and a lot of attention!) which made the performance even better. But when it was time to sing the birthday song and – brace yourselves – Michael said he’s never seen Titanic. Unfortunately, he also showed that can’t really sing songs like Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” because, well, he’s not Celine.

Cade Foehner

Cade starts his performance with the Jewel’s “Who Will Save Your Soul.” The start is kind of soft but then he works his way to real rock and roll that judges loved! Well, Katy Perry didn’t feel 100% what Cade did on stage but she said that her mom is definitely voting for him. That’s good, right? Cade did much, much, much better with Prince’s “Jungle Love.” Katy Perry agrees.

Catie Turner

It turns out that Nick Jonas has been Catie’s crush since she was five! But even though she turns into a teenage girl when she’s with Nick, Catie turns into a real superstar when she picks up the microphone! Catie sang a 60s versions of “Oop!…I Did It Again.” “It sounds like you were Amy Winehouse singing a Britney Spears song,” Katy Perry told Catie. Wow, now that’s a compliment! Unfortunately, Catie kind of ruined everything with the Prince-penned “Manic Monday” by Bangles. The first verse was a disaster and the rest sounded… bad.

Caleb Lee Hutchinson

Caleb’s country take on the pop hit “Amazed” by Lonestar was fantastic. His confidence combined with his talent is just too strong for anyone to resist. His signature vibrato and bass were just perfect, like every single time before. But then he did something different with his “When Doves Cry” performance. Armed with his acoustic guitar, Caleb reminded us that he’s truly a star.

Maddie Poppe

Unlike Caleb, Maddie didn’t really have that much confidence. However, her self-esteem has grown week after week, and this time she was doing a beautiful rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” sang by Sinead O’Connor in 1990. Maddie played the piano and hit the high note and showed everyone that when she wants, she can be a true classic. For her birthday song, Maddie sang “If It Makes You Happy” by Sheryl Crow and it was another great success. All in all, it was a great night for Maddie.

Voting results were in: Jurnee and Catie were eliminated. In other words, Caleb, Maddie, Cade, Gabby and Michael are the official Top 5. We can’t wait for the next round that will be mentored by Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood in Nashville.
