The Golden Globes 2019 officially started awards season on January 6! The official hosts for the night were Killing Eve and Grey’s Anatomy actress Sandra Oh alongside Brooklyn Nine-Nine comedian Andy Samberg. The famous duo successfully followed in the footsteps of Seth Meyer, who was the host last year.
When it comes to nominations, this year was as exciting as all the years before. Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close and Lady Gaga were nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture in Drama, while Amy Adams and Regina King were nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Jim Carrey, Michael Douglas and Donald Glover were nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy.
Sandra Oh and Julia Roberts were placed in the running for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama. Bradley Cooper and Spike Lee were nominated for Best Director, with Lee’s latest production BlacKkKlansman also receiving a nomination for Best Motion Picture in Drama with Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther.
Netflix ruled this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma and Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method took home some of the 76th annual Golden Globes’ biggest awards. The biggest surprise of the night was Rami Malek, who won the Best Drama and Best Actor awards. Another surprise was the Best Comedy award that went to Green Book, while everyone thought that frontrunner Vice was going to get it. Green Book won three prizes, while Bohemian Rhapsody and Roma tied with two.
As always, this was a big night for television. Kominsky Method won the Best Comedy award and Best Actor award in a TV comedy for Michael Douglas. Kominsky Method tied with The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story for most wins. Gianni Versace also won the Best Limited Series award and Best Actor in a Limited Series for Darren Criss.
Glenn Close claimed the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama award for her performance in The Wife. This was a big surprise for everyone as this was a star-studded category that included Nicole Kidman, Lady Gaga, Melissa McCarthy, and Rosamund Pike. However, Lady Gaga wasn’t completely disappointed; the famous singer and actress took a Golden Globe home for the hit single Shallow in the Best Original Song category. Patricia Clarkson and Patricia Arquette won a Supporting Actress award for Sharp Objects and a Best Actress win for Escape at Dannemora. This was a special evening for Sandra Oh, who wasn’t only the host for the night, but also, she made history as the first actress of Asian descent to win more than one Golden Globe for her performance in Killing Eve.
Looking Back at the Red Carpet
The Golden Globes have been around for 76 years. That means that there were some iconic (both good and bad) looks for decades. Back in the day, Marilyn Monroe wore black sequin dress and Liza Minnelli and Elizabeth Taylor looked fabulous in sequins and shoulder pads in the ‘80s.
Among the most memorable red carpet moments from the Golden Globes are also Kate Moss’ high-neck sequin dress that she wore while attending the awards with her then-boyfriend Johnny Depp. And let’s not forget Sarah Michelle Gellar’s 2001 halterneck Valentino outfit. Sarah Jessica Parker rocked baby pink Emanuel Ungaro gown and then still relatively unknown Angelina Jolie also made her red carpet debut in 1998 in a sparkling dress.
Salma Hayek’s deep crimson corseted Narciso Rodriguez will never be forgotten, as well as Hillary Swank’s sleek copper Calvin Klein gown which she chose for her Million Dollar Baby award. Finally, we’ll never forget Sienna Miller’s Grecian moment, when the actress looked amazing in a white Marchesa gown with the intricate metallic overlay.
Golden Globes 2019 Dress Code
As always, Golden Globes were filled with breathtaking dresses and sharp tuxedos. From Naomi Kidman in decorative Michael Kors dress to Gemma Chan in Valentino Couture, the Hollywood’s biggest stars gave their best to show as many colors and details as possible.
Even though there still isn’t an award for the Best Dressed Celebrity at the Golden Globes, the stars were once again trying to win this title, setting the tone of this year’s awards season among many elegant and shiny looks. That’s why many stars rocked bows and long, column-like gowns. It seems like the Hollywood A-listers and their stylists chose the golden theme in some way for this special night.
Actresses like Saoirse Ronan and Regina King were just some of them, while Lady Gaga opted for an even more glamorous dress. However, only a few stars chose over-the-top princess dresses, but that doesn’t mean they went for a less fabulous option. Here’s what the best dressed stars of the Golden Globes 2019 wore!
Gemma Chan in Maison Valentino
Gemma looks amazing on every red carpet she sets her foot on and these Golden Globes award were no different. Chan rocked a navy blue gown with one leg poked out. She used this pose to show off her Louboutin heels and her sexy figure, of course!
Sandra Oh in Atelier Versace
Sandra was one of the evenings biggest winners; not only did she host the event, but she also took home a few prizes! Oh looked down-right breathtaking in her white asymmetrical shoulder gown and statement bracelets.
Regina King in Alberta Ferretti
Regina was a vision in her rose Alberta Ferretti gown. King, who was a double nominee that night, looked amazing and ready to slay as soon as she stepped onto the red carpet. But more than anything else, King proved that elegance and glamour never die. Just like a real queen.
Rosamund Pike in Clare Waight Keller
Speaking of elegance, Rosamund looked super glamorous in a Givenchy Haute Couture look by Clare Waight Keller. The look was complete with a hand-embroidered silver bolero jacket she wore over a black knitted, cut-out bodysuit and black skirt in layers of stretch cady and organza.
Lady Gaga in Maison Valentino
The A Star is Born nominee doesn’t necessarily wear meat dresses on the red carpet. On the contrary, Gaga decided to change the minds of everyone who thought so this time with her glam look. This custom periwinkle Haute Couture gown created by Valentino Creative Director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, featured balloon sleeves, an endless train, and a strapless silhouette. The gown is an ode to the one that Judy Garland wore in the 1954 version of A Star is Born, which makes it even more special.
Ryan Seacrest in Ryan Seacrest Distinction Collection
Golden Globes red carpet is usually one of the places where many ladies and only a few gents shine. However, whenever Ryan Seacrest steps on it, the red carpet becomes a special place for menswear. The famous TV personality stepped out at the event wearing a custom Ryan Seacrest Distinction Collection suit and Givenchy shoes.
For those who don’t know, Distinction is a line of suits created by Ryan Seacrest and sold exclusively at Macy’s. The line was launched in 2014 when the host of “American Idol” created a clothing line that’s affordable with perpetually on-sale models.
Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein by Appointment, Michael B. Jordan in Burberry and Danai Gurira in Rodarte
The cast of Black Panther looked like real kings and queens on the red carpet. Lupita Nyong’o was especially shining in CK strapless, fitted cobalt blue chain fringed dress with silver drop beads.
This is not the first time that Lupita has slayed the red carpet. Nyong’o usually wears bright and scarlet colors on the red carpet, such as scarlet red, emerald green. She matches these colors with modern cuts. Lupita’s favorite designers include Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, and Lanvin.
Constance Wu in Vera Wang
The spaghetti strap gown made the Fresh Off the Boat star look edgy and elegant at the same time. Custom made by Vera Wang, the gown had sheer corset bodice and orange velvet ribbon that made the look very fresh.
Julia Roberts in Stella McCartney
Julia Roberts has had her share of serious fashion risks on the red carpet. There was the oversized men’s Giorgio Armani suit at the 1990 Golden Globes, but also, Roberts rocked the classic blush gown that she co-designed with the Italian couturier for the 2004 Academy Awards. Then there was the legendary bright red Dolce & Gabbana mini she wore at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival to promote August: Osage County. Even though Julia is most known for her black and white choices, she is not afraid to wear colors from time to time.
At the Golden Globes 2019, Roberts proved that she still rocks both looks, feminine and masculine in a flowing, one-shoulder top over black peg-leg trousers by Stella McCartney.
Emily Blunt in Alexander McQueen
From The Devil Wears Prada to Mary Poppins, Emily Blunt has proven many times that she is an amazing actress. But acting is not Emily’s only talent. On the contrary, Blunt’s stunning red carpet style is intriguing everyone every single time she steps on it. The beautiful actress can master anything from florals to edgy metallic designs with her own touch of elegance.
At this year’s Golden Globes, Emily hit the red carpet in a gray lace, high-neck sleeveless gown by Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton, which was more than supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
Caitriona Balfe in Moschino Couture by Jeremy Scott
Caitriona has surprised many people with her fashion choice, but in a good way! The Outlander actress wore a burgundy velvet bottom complete with exaggerated hips.
Timothee Chalamet in Louis Vuitton
Ryan Seacrest wasn’t the only stylish man on the red carpet this January. Usually, for the men of Hollywood, the red carpet is the place for elegant tailoring and occasional adventurous accessory. But then Timothee Chalamet took things to the next level! The young actor dressed in custom Louis Vuitton (his outfit was designed by the house’s new menswear designer Virgil Abloh). So what made his look so special? It wasn’t his pants, his shirt, or even his shoes. It was the glittering, bedazzled harness that he wore on top of everything!
Janelle Monae in Chanel
Janelle was also one of the evening’s presenters. The star looked shiny and elegant in an embroidered black and gold tweed dress with a large feathered denim collar layered over a long sleeve knit dress that she paired with a gold feathered cap!
Saoirse Ronan in Gucci
Ronan carried the beaded deep V-neck gown with so much style and ease. The star channeled the 1920s in a custom Gucci Antique platinum beaded sheer tulle gown with crystals. This was a bold choice that not everyone could have pulled off. But Saoirse isn’t everyone!
