Germany’s Player Maker Mesut Ozil Has Announced His Retirement from International Football.

Arsenal’s and Germany’s playmaker Mesut Ozil has officially announced his instantaneous retirement from International football. The German player made the major announcement on Sunday evening after several claims of disrespect and racism. This might have been caused by his high-profile, and contentious summit with Turkish leader Recipe Tayyip Erdogan before the World Cup tournament kicked off. The picture that went viral showcased the Arsenal player with Turkish President Recep together with Manchester city player, Ikay Gundagon.

Both football players came in for heavy criticism from pundits and German fans in their homeland. As a result of the picture, veteran German footballers like Ottmar Hitzfeld and Olivier Bierhoff suggested that Mesut Ozil shouldn’t have been allowed to represent the nation in the just-completed World Cup tournament in Russia. The German team went to the World Cup where it was embarrassed and kicked out at the group stages, despite being the defending champions for the World Cup trophy. Germany was unable to get themselves off from the biting jaws of Mexico and South Korea. After the early bow from the World Cup, Ozil went on to explain his position over the picture that had already gone viral. It seems that the issue pressed the player where he went to his tweeter account and announced his retirement from the national team.

Mesut Ozil noted that the treatment that he had received from the fans and the DFB was so heartbreaking and made him wish not ever wearing the national jersey again. He revealed this in a very lengthy speech. Ozil stated that the German football fraternity had forgotten him. Since he made his debut with the national team in 2009. He argued that what he had achieved with the team had already been soiled and flamed away. It was really unfair of how he was being treated with all the hate speech and rumor mongering.

Mesut added that he had made the decision with a very heavy heart after he took time to consider all the events. He noted that he was not going to wear the German national jersey as long as he still felt that he was being disrespected. He wore the national jersey with pride before the incident. He also had a strong sense of belonging and excitement. However, after the tournament, he was no longer feeling the same. He reported that the decision was very challenging for him to make because he usually delivered everything he had for the team.
